On January 26, Portland resident Kate Campbell Strauss recounts her pilgrimage across France to reach Spain’s Santiago de Compostela Cathedral at Saint Joseph’s College’s first Cultural Affairs Series event of 2014. The presentation will be hosted at the Maine Irish Heritage Center in Portland.
Campbell’s talk, “Heeding the Call: Adventures of the Spirit on El Camino de Santiago,” is a photographic presentation of her four-month-long, solo journey, one taken for more than a thousand years by pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Spain. Many people believe the cathedral houses the relics of Saint James the Apostle. Campbell was one of almost 200,000 pilgrims to undertake the pilgrimage in 2011.
Campbell’s presentation is the first Karen Lemke Memorial Lecture, a series dedicated to the memory of former Saint Joseph’s faculty member Karen Lemke upon her passing in 2013.
The presentation begins at 2 p.m. at the Maine Irish Heritage Center at 34 Gray Street, Portland. Entrance to the event is $5 for the general public, and it is free for members of the Maine Irish Heritage Center and the Saint Joseph’s College community.
The Cultural Affairs Series continues during the spring semester with three additional events:

—March 19, “All Standing: The True Story of Hunger, Rebellion, and Survival Aboard the Jeanie Johnston,” with author Kathryn Miles;
—March 31, “Baseball: The Writers’ Sport,” with Saint Joseph’s professor of English Dr. Edward Rielly.
All Cultural Affairs Series events take place at 6:30 p.m. in Saint Joseph’s College’s Viola George Auditorium, in Harold Alfond Hall, unless otherwise noted.
